Game Recaps

Game 3 - Wilmette Wings v Grayslake Galaxy

05/10/2012, 8:30pm (CDT)
By Mike Radford

Hanging on for the Win

Wow- we barely held on to this one.

After a very strong start to the game (first 15 minutes) we slowly let our opponents back into the game.  In the second half, we were completely out played by Grayslake.  They definitely wanted this game more than we did.  Our defensive coverage was very lacking and unorganized and we didn't pressure the ball enough in our defensive half.  This allowed them to break through our defense countless times and they had a ton of very good scoring opportunities.  Fortunately for us, they did a very poor job of finishing and we were able to barely hold on to win the game 4-3.

Another aspect I would like to see improved is winning 50/50 balls in the midfield. Almost every punt and goal kick from the other team would bounce past our midfield and we would put of defenders under pressure right away to make a good play to break the attack.  I'd like to see us winning these in the mid...to change that we need to have better field positioning and we need to show more aggressiveness with going to the ball.

The good news- we pulled off a victory despite our underacheiving team effort today.  Also- we did have a number of players that had good individual performances today.

Practice this week will focus on defensive pressure in front of the goal and possession.

Final Score: Wings 4 - Galaxy 3

Players of the Game

Chase M had a very strong individual performance as a defender in the first half- had made a lot of big saves at goalie to seal the victory for us today.  Also- his first goal of the game for us when he won the ball and finished on a nice shot from far out.  This was the highlight of the game!  Emmett B is the other player of the game.  His defensive work rate in the midfield helped to keep us in this game today.  Also also contributed two very nice goals- and almost had another on a very well executed corner kick play.  Nice job guys!
