Tom's Winter Recap and Spring Update

By Tom Gizynski, 03/21/19, 4:00PM CDT

Dear Wilmette Wings Players & Families –

Well after a long and competitive indoor season I wanted to share some highlights from the winter and get us thinking about some warm, possibly, wet spring season games coming up.

Winter Season
The winter session always feels a bit longer, but it’s full of great opportunities for the kids to keep honing their skills.  From the faster pace of turf to the smaller spaces, everything indoors makes you play at your highest level. It’s that kind of competition that we hope translates to our players and teams going back outside for the spring season.

This winter we’ve been able to get all the kids tons of touches on the ball.  I know the coaching staff and myself have seen some great strides over the last few months.  And although clawing and scratching for wins in league play is tough we’ve had a handful of teams finish in 1st and 2nd place this Winter at the AC and Quad.  Here are some notable finishes for our Wings teams.  Great job players, coaches and managers!

AC/QUAD 1st Place – 2011 Red Boys & 2010 Red Girls

AC/QUAD 2nd Place – 2009 Red Girls, 2008 Red Girls, 2007 Premier Girls, 2006 Premier Girls & 2009 Red Boys

Spring Season Updates
We kick things off this spring with our “Early Spring Practice Schedule” on Monday, April 1st.  For the first two weeks we make sure all our teams have at least one practice indoors so that we can guarantee that our players can train regardless of weather or field conditions.  On April 15th we officially move all practices outside and will start following the “Late Spring Practice Schedule”.  Hopefully we make it past some of those April showers by then. All practice and game schedules should be up on your SE calendars.

Players, coaches and teams have been working hard all year and the spring season is our chance to see how everyone has progressed.  Whether it’s competing as a team to finish higher in your league divisions from the fall, or taking on a new challenge in a higher division in the spring, going back outside and playing in bigger spaces will give our players a chance to showcase the skills and decision making they’ve been working on all year.  Let’s go out there to compete and have fun.

Wings Players in High School
Spring also kicks off the High School Season for girls in the state.  We’re really proud off all our past and present Wings players who’ll be representing New Trier, Loyola Academy, North Shore Country Day and other local high schools.  We’ll be putting together a Wings night for an upcoming New Trier game so stay tuned for a date and time.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the fields this spring.

Go Wings!
